Choosing an Ecommerce Platform: Shopify, WooCommerce or Something Else

How to pick the right ecommerce platform for your catalogue size, budget and growth plans — without the sales pitch.

Every ecommerce platform vendor will tell you theirs is the right answer for everyone. It isn't — the right platform depends on your catalogue, your budget, and how much control you actually need over the technical side.

Shopify: Fast to Launch, Low Maintenance

Shopify is usually the right call for businesses that want to get selling quickly without managing hosting, security updates or technical maintenance themselves. The trade-off is a monthly platform fee and somewhat less flexibility for highly custom requirements — for most small and mid-sized retailers, that trade-off is well worth it.

WooCommerce: More Control, More Responsibility

Built on WordPress, WooCommerce gives you more flexibility and no mandatory platform fee, but you (or someone) is responsible for hosting, updates and security. It suits businesses that already have WordPress expertise on hand or specific customisation needs that off-the-shelf Shopify apps don't cover well.

When Neither Is the Right Fit

Large or highly complex catalogues, unusual product configurations, or tight integrations with existing internal systems sometimes genuinely need a custom-built store or a more specialised platform. This is the exception rather than the rule — most businesses overestimate how "unique" their requirements are.

The Question That Actually Decides It

Rather than starting with "which platform is best", start with: how big is the catalogue, who will manage the store day to day, what does it need to connect to, and how much ongoing technical maintenance are you willing to take on? The answer to those four questions makes the platform choice almost obvious.

We make this call platform-by-platform rather than defaulting to one option, as part of every Ecommerce Store Setup project.
